Interview: Canon launches five EU programmes exclusively across the zanox Group

In order to ramp up their online store promotion, multinational imaging giant Canon has launched five affiliate programmes exclusively in the UK, Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy with zanox and Affiliate Window.

We interviewed Canon’s Director of E-Commerce, John Donnellan to find out what makes the brand stand out from their competitors, the publisher types they wish to partner with and the benefits of the programme for publishers.

Q. Welcome to the zanox network! Canon is a worldwide-recognised brand. In your opinion, how do you stand out from your digital imaging counterparts?

Canon is always striving to be the leading organisation when it comes to imaging, and innovation is something we continue to work and improve on. As a company, we have recognised that the market has evolved, continues to evolve and that consumer behaviour is changing. Therefore, in 2014, we launched a new consumer brand campaign ‘Come and See’, with the purpose to move from a product-centric to a customer-centric organisation. To support this, we have undertaken a digital transformation of our operating model to build a new omni-channel experience. By making these changes and focusing on the customer, we hope to prosper in this competitive and challenging market.

Q. What are the key benefits for publishers who are interested in partnering with you?

Publishers who join our programme will benefit from promoting a renowned, globally established brand which is one of the biggest in the imaging and optical sector.

Our standard category commission rates of up to 3% is very competitive. In addition, we will be offering different incentives and a bonus reward scheme during launch to help give publishers a kick-start in their affiliation with us.

Publishers will also benefit from promoting some of our exclusive promotions and offers, which will only be available on our ecommerce store. Not forgetting other key features, which make it attractive for consumers to purchase including free standard delivery and a free returns policy within 14 days, as well as a two-year commercial warranty on hardware products. Key product launches will also enable publishers to promote Canon’s latest releases, giving consumers the added incentive to visit the Canon ecommerce store.

Q. What type of publishers are you hoping to partner with? Are there are any additional partnership opportunities outside of the traditional CPA model that you would consider?

Canon is open to collaborating with all types of publishers. We see some unique opportunities with content sites notably travel and parenting partners, which can help us reach these consumers. In addition, students and employee portals represent key verticals that we feel will be some of our bigger revenue drivers. This is not forgetting the traditional voucher and cash back sites, which no doubt will add to the success of the programme.

If the opportunity presents itself, we will be willing to explore CPM and CPL models.

Q. Can you tell us about any recent product launches that would help publishers to better promote Canon?

Our product launch timings and frequency vary by category and by country. Recently, we have launched a couple of key lines in our DSLR category – 1300D an entry level SLR and our more advanced SLR in the 80D. Within our camera category sales, these products have contributed 7% and 12% respectively which has been very positive, since launch was less than five months ago.

Recently, we made available on our UK, DE, NL and IT stores our advanced DSLR, the 5D MKIV. This is our most premium DSLR aimed at professionals, enabling them to shoot quality images and full HD movies.

We encourage our publishers to promote all of our categories and to keep up to date with the latest releases by looking out for our newsletter / email communications.

Q. Are there any exciting plans in the pipeline within the next 12 months that you’d like to share?

Canon is always striving to innovate and we want to create an ecommerce offering which is the go-to destination for consumers looking for Canon products.

We have a number of projects associated with improving the onsite Canon experience including but not limited to enabling pre-order functionality, unlocking new promotional mechanics and key changes to product listing and detail pages, to allow consumers to find the products they want quicker and easier.

We are also developing on own photobook proposition as well as enhancing our portfolio of Canon products including Irista photo storage solution and Lifecake, our baby app for parents enabling them to capture and view photos, videos and stories of their children.

Interview: Canon lanceert vijf exclusieve EU programma’s bij de zanox Group

Multinational imaging gigant Canon voert de promotie van hun online shop op door samen met de bekroonde affiliate netwerken zanox en Affiliate Window exclusieve affiliate programma’s te starten in Nederland, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Italië.

Wij interviewden Canon Europe’s e-Commerce Digital Marketing Specialist Timothy Man om uit te vinden wat het merk onderscheidt van zijn concurrenten, met welk type publishers zij graag willen samenwerken en wat de voordelen van het Canon affiliate programma zijn voor publishers.

Q. Welkom bij het zanox netwerk! Canon is wereldwijd een alombekend merk. Hoe denk jij dat Canon zich onderscheidt ten opzichte van haar concurrenten?

Canon streeft er altijd naar om marktleider te zijn op het gebied van imaging, waarbij wij continu blijven werken aan innovatie en onszelf willen blijven verbeteren waar mogelijk. Als bedrijf hebben we gemerkt dat de markt zich flink ontwikkeld heeft, zich nog altijd verder ontwikkelt en dat bovendien het consumentengedrag aan het veranderen is. Daarom zijn we in 2014 gestart met een nieuwe campagne, genaamd ‘Come and See’, met het doel om de vertaalslag te maken van een productgeoriënteerde organisatie naar een klantgeoriënteerde organisatie. Om deze wijziging van focus te ondersteunen, heeft ons operationele model een digitale transformatie ondergaan, zodat het mogelijk was om een nieuwe ‘omni-channel ervaring’ te creëren. Door deze veranderingen door te voeren en ons te focussen op de klant, hopen we te floreren in deze competitieve en uitdagende markt.

Q: Wat zijn de belangrijkste voordelen voor publishers die geïnteresseerd zijn in een samenwerking met jullie?

Allereerst profiteren publishers die zich aansluiten bij ons programma natuurlijk van het promoten van een befaamd en internationaal merk dat behoort tot één van de grootste spelers in de sector.

Daarnaast is onze standaardcommissie van 3% erg aantrekkelijk en competitief. Bovendien bieden we publishers tijdens de lancering van ons programma dubbele commissie en een zeer aantrekkelijke bonusregeling om ze een kick-start te geven bij de promotie van ons programma.

De publishers zullen ook profiteren van de mogelijkheid om enkele van onze exclusieve acties en deals te kunnen promoten die alleen beschikbaar zijn in onze e-commerce store. En natuurlijk niet te vergeten onze aantrekkelijke voorwaarden voor consumenten die bestellen in onze webshop, waaronder gratis verzending en het gratis binnen-14-dagen retourbeleid, maar ook de 2-jaar garantie op hardware producten. En door middel van key productlanceringen bieden we publishers bovendien de mogelijkheid om Canon’s laatste producten te promoten, waarmee consumenten een extra incentive gegeven wordt om de Canon e-commerce store te bezoeken.

Q. Met wat voor soort type publishers hoop je samen te werken? Zijn er bijvoorbeeld enkele extra mogelijkheden voor samenwerkingen buiten het traditionele CPA model die jullie eventueel zouden overwegen?

Canon staat er voor open om samen te werken met elk type publisher. We zien bijvoorbeeld unieke mogelijkheden met content websites, in het bijzonder travel- en ouderschapswebsites, die ons kunnen helpen om deze consumenten te bereiken. Wij geloven dat studenten- en werknemersportals bovendien twee belangrijke segmenten vertegenwoordigen die tot de grotere omzetaanjagers behoren. En niet te vergeten de traditionele kortingcodes- en cashbackwebsites, die zonder twijfel aandeel zullen hebben in het succes van het programma.

En als gelegenheid zich voordoet, dan zullen we ook CPM– en CPL-modellen overwegen.

Q. Kun je ons iets vertellen over recente productlanceringen die publishers kunnen helpen in het promoten van Canon?

Timing en frequentie van onze productlanceringen variëren per categorie en per land. Onlangs hebben we bijvoorbeeld een aantal nieuwe belangrijke productlijnen binnen de DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex-camera) categorie gelanceerd – de 1300D, een spiegelreflexcamera voor de beginner, en de geavanceerdere 80D. Binnen de categorie ‘Camera’ hebben deze producten een salesaandeel gehad van respectievelijk 7% en 12%. Een erg positief resultaat, aangezien beide producten pas vijf maanden geleden gelanceerd zijn!

Pas geleden hebben we ook onze geavanceerde DSLR, de 5D MKIV, beschikbaar gesteld voor de UK, DE, NL en IT stores. Dit is ons meest premium digitale spiegelreflexcamera gericht op professionals, waarmee hoge kwaliteit foto’s en HD video’s gemaakt kunnen worden.

We moedigen onze publishers echt aan om al onze productcategorieën te promoten en up-to-date te blijven over de laatste lanceringen door onze nieuwsbrief en e-mails in de gaten te houden.

Q. Zijn er nog spannende plannen in de pijplijn voor het aankomende jaar die je graag wilt delen? 

Canon wilt altijd innoveren en we streven ernaar een e-commerce omgeving te creëren dat de nummer 1 bestemming zal zijn voor klanten die op zoek zijn naar Canon producten.

Momenteel hebben we een aantal projecten lopen, die geassocieerd zijn met het verbeteren van de onsite Canon ervaring. Tot deze projecten behoren onder andere het mogelijk maken van pre-ordering, nieuwe promotiemogelijkheden en key wijzigingen doorvoeren aan de product- en detailpagina’s, zodat de consument sneller en gemakkelijker het gewenste Canon product vindt.

We zijn ook bezig met het ontwikkelen van een eigen fotoboek-propositie, evenals het uitbreiden van ons Canon productportfolio met onder andere Irista photo storage solution en Lifecake, een baby-app, waarmee ouders foto’s, video’s en verhalen van hun kinderen vast kunnen leggen.

En we kijken er in het e-commerce team erg naar uit wat er allemaal nog gaat komen!
